According to Business Insider, Tinder remains the most popular dating app with an estimated 50 million users worldwide. The app allows individuals to create profiles for others to view. Participants can scroll through images and swipe right to “like” and save the profiles of individuals that they find attractive. Swiping left would indicate that the user is not interested. If both parties swiped to the right, they will “match” and be able to chat.
Tinder recently released a new feature allowing users to upload 2-second looping videos in place of pictures on their profile. According to Tinder, the videos allow users “to show more personality, which is the best way to get more right swipes”.
The Cultural Translator, created by Axis, warns parents that even if your teens do not use Tinder “the videos will reinforce the dehumanizing idea of mass objectification, that people should be judged, sifted through, and discarded or liked based on a 2-second impression that reduces human beings to products in a seemingly endless digital display window where not only their bodies, but also their hearts and souls seem up for sale.”
