Anti-Abstinence Crowd Goes to Jail
Published by contactus November 9th, 2005 in AbstinenceAt least a dozen AIDS activists tasted jail life after trespassing on the property of the Family Research Council this week. Dressed as life-size condoms, the perpetrators chained themselves to lobby furniture in an apparent demonstration against the FRC’s support of abstinence education.
This protest follows on the heels of two similar events – a radical demonstration outside the White House this week and the physical bullying of White House domestic policy adviser Claude Allen at an abstinence education evaluation conference hosted by HHS last week. Included in the demonstrations were chants such as “Abstinence doesn’t work.”
Anti-abstinence groups are furious at the success abstinence education has had around the globe in recent years. Many are also upset that new condom labels may soon be issued which warn that condoms do not protect against human papillomavirus (HPV).
“Anti-abstinence groups are losing the monopoly on kids’ minds that they have enjoyed for more than forty years and they’re scared,” said Leslee J. Unruh, president of the Abstinence Clearinghouse. “Relying on science to support their programs doesn’t work because their programs don’t work. What’s left? Apparently dressing like a giant piece of latex.”
