Abstinence in Taipei, Taiwan

Thousands of university students will hear that only abstinence until marriage provides 100 percent protection against sexually transmitted diseases, unexpected pregnancy, and heartache. Ms. Unruh is visiting Taiwan at the request of Fu Jen Catholic University, affiliates of the Abstinence Clearinghouse.

While in Taipei, Ms. Unruh has had the opportunity to address several governmental leaders. On Monday, she spoke at a press conference at the Department of Education. During the press conference, she spoke with legislators on the effects of sexual activity outside of marriage. Later, at a hearing at the Department of Health, Ms. Unruh and the other speakers at the conference shared their personal experiences.

Ms. Unruh has been immersed in the culture for nearly a week and has been witness to the conditions that place barriers to abstinence until marriage education.

“The people are very, very sweet. They don’t have anything,” explained Ms. Unruh in a call from Taipei. “It has been a tough road for them to do abstinence education.”

“They are so desperate for help [in Asia],” said Unruh. “They get no money. They have very few abstinence educators. Everything we teach them at the International Abstinence Conference, they do.”
