Record Abstinence Education Funding One Step Closer
Earlier this Fall, the Abstinence Clearinghouse reported on two victories for abstinence education during the appropriations conference committee meetings. A record level of funding for the Community-Based Abstinence Education grant program was appropriated and an anti-abstinence “medical-accuracy” amendment was stripped from the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2007.
The House of Representatives last week voted to approve appropriations bill including the favorable language and the $10.8 million increase.
The Senate may consider the legislation this week before the winter recess. Although the bill was scheduled to be voted on last week, some senators decided to delay the debate and the vote to put pressure on of other bills that affect the budget.
The two hard-fought victories that were gained in the conference committee will not be sealed until the Senate passes the bill and the President signs it into law. However, passage in the House is a significant step forward in the process.
