“Tragic” Outcomes Of Teen Pregnancies Shows Abstinence-Only Programs ‘Not Working,’ Opinion Piece Says

The “tragic outcomes” of two recent pregnancies among Texas teenagers shows that abstinence-only sex education programs are “not working,” Peter Durkin, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas, writes in a Houston Chronicle opinion piece. Durkin adds, “Sex education should begin “at home with parents…”

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a Planned Parenthood employee or director actually say that education about sex should begin at home. AMAZING! It’s true, parents should be the primary educators of their children, especially when it comes to sex. According to a Zogby Poll, parents overwhelming want abstinence taught to their kids. What parent do you know that says, “I wish my teen would get pregnant at 14″ or “I wish my son would contract Chlamydia”? It’s preposterous.

The message of abstinence is clear - you don’t have sex, you don’t get pregnant, you don’t get an STD. The message of “safer sex” is not so simple - you have sex, you may get pregnant, you may get and STD, you may be depressed and attempt suicide, you may be more likley to be on welfare. However, they paint “comprehensive” sex education as wonderful because of all the information they give. Ever wonder how they talk about abstinence? As a form of birth control. End of story, nothing further, let’s move on to how to “safely” have oral or anal sex.

Parents, if you don’t want your teen or pre-teen, let’s be honest - some of these kids are 11 and 12, to have to deal with adult consequences for adult activities such as sex, teach them that it’s not okay; don’t let Planned Parenthood do your job - they won’t do it justice. After all, where do you think they refer them to if they are pregnant? Certainly not to you, otherwise, how would they make thier money?
