Dating Struggles

A recent Pew Research study found that 67% of respondents reported their dating lives are not going well. Only 25% of respondents said it is easy to find a date, while the majority of respondents said it is somewhat difficult or very difficult. These numbers may seem surprising, but they clearly highlight the fact that the single lifestyle is at an all-time high. One in three American households is a person living alone. While some people choose a life of singleness as a special way to serve others, many merely fall into singleness by default, frustrated and burdened by the woes of modern dating.

Technology obviously plays a major role in modern dating. Tinder, an extremely popular dating and hook-up app, was released 10 years ago. Since then, many similar apps have escalated the online dating opportunities. Men and women alike are exhausted from the mindless swiping, disingenuous first dates, and meaningless hook-ups. Dating today is not what it was for our parents, much less our grandparents.

While there is no one solution to the current generation's struggles with dating, we can encourage a return to "traditional" values in dating. This allows dating couples to benefit from in-person interactions, abstinence until marriage and the pursuit of purity. Furthermore, returning a sense of purpose to dating will hopefully lead to more satisfaction and "success" in the realm of pursuing healthy, meaningful relationships.
