The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) named Discord on their 2022 Dirty Dozen List, a list of mainstream companies that are major facilitators of sexual exploitation in the United States.
Discord is a messaging app that was originally intended for gamers and exploded in popularity in 2020 during the pandemic. First, Discord does not have an adequate age verification system. Discord has "servers" that act as chat rooms for certain groups of people with shared interests. Users can then join servers to connect with others about the topic. While some servers are public, many are private and require an invite or password to join. While Discord's Safety Center claims to monitor every server, Discord consistently fails in the monitoring and removal of abusive content and its perpetrators.
