Teaching Children About Independence Day

As you anticipate hanging your American flag, planning a weekend at the lake and gathering with family and friends for the 4th of July, consider also taking time to talk with your children about what Independence Day means for Americans.

The 4th of July, or Independence Day, is a federal holiday that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Ask your children what they know about the history of this special date. Consider discussing why we celebrate freedom and specific characteristics about America's founding principles that are unique or different from other countries.

Here are a few ways you can show patriotism as a family this 4th of July:

  • Learn a patriotic song.
  • Share the significance of the stars and stripes on the American Flag and plan an American flag-themed art project.
  • Visit a local historical site.
  • Watch a movie or television show like Liberty's Kids that helps your children build context for understanding American history.

In summary, before firing up the BBQ and setting off the fireworks, take time to teach your kids about the 4th of July! It's a moment in time that encourages us to celebrate the United States of America and all that comes with our freedom.
