Teaching Critical Consumerism

Have you ever been with your teen in the car and heard a sexually degrading song lyric or found yourself changing the channel during a family night? Next time you find yourself in a situation where a song or television show is controversial, ask your teen to interpret what moral is being compromised or challenged. For example, if a television show insinuates that a couple is cohabitating prior to marriage, discuss how cohabitation is harmful to a relationship.

Teach your child to be a critical consumer of media and culture. Why? Many young people are raised on a steady diet of misinformed, harmful views of sex and relationships. Help your teens train themselves to critically examine the media they consume and the cultural dynamics that shape their lives each day.
