The National Center on Sexual Exploitation named Reddit on their 2022 Dirty Dozen List, a list of mainstream companies that are major facilitators of sexual exploitation in the United States.
Reddit is often referred to as the "front page of the internet," as it provides a platform for over 2 million user-created communities and conversation boards, or "subreddits," that cover a vast spectrum of topics. While some subreddits innocently cover authors or academic topics, many contain sexually explicit images and videos posted without consent, child pornography, hardcore pornography, prostitution and the facilitation of sex trafficking.
As a company, Reddit turns a blind eye to the abusive material being shared on their platform, even leaving removal requests from victims of exploitative material completely unanswered. Reddit is also used to recruit and indoctrinate young people in dangerous ideologies by giving isolated teens a sense of belonging to a community on a subreddit. Reddit needs to make changes to their policy regarding sexually explicit material, age restrictions, and user-friendly parental controls.
