Three conservative parenting groups filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education, Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, and the advisory council for parents and families. These parenting groups, including Parents Defending Education, allege that the council does not represent families from different ideological perspectives than that of the Biden administration. They claim their values were specifically excluded despite laws that regulate advisory councils.
The basis of this lawsuit is the 1972 Federal Advisory Committee Act, which requires all advisory committees to be composed of a "balanced group of people of different viewpoints." The Department of Education believes it has done this by including 14 organizations advocating for different types of policy. However, it remains clear that organizations that advocate for traditional values are not included at all. As primary educators of their children, conervative parents deserve to be included at all levels of their children's schooling—even within the federal government.
