The Marriage Strengthening Research & Dissemination Center recently released new research regarding teenagers and cohabitation. They found that marriage is not viewed favorably by the majority of teenagers ages 15 to 19, despite the fact that 95% of the teenagers in the study said they expect they'll get married someday.
Researchers also found that 80% of teenagers expect that they will cohabitate with a significant other outside of marriage someday. While about 10% more teenage boys expect to cohabitate than teenage girls, the biggest disparity is in religiosity. Teenagers who attend church weekly or more are almost 20% less likely to plan on cohabitation someday.
Young people need to understand the many benefits of marriage over cohabitation. Young people who choose to get married without cohabitating are more financially secure, more likely to experience sexual satisfaction, less likely to get divorced and overall experience better physical and mental health.
