Happy Independence Day

Independence Day is almost here! The Fourth of July brings memories of swimming, cook-outs and fireworks. But there is much more to the holiday than these traditions. July 4, 1776 is a day that Americans commemorate annually because of the prevailing courage of our Founding Fathers and the strong values with which they established our nation.

It is important to learn the history behind our nation's independence. According to Arcadia Publishing and The History Press, we need to be teaching our children American history from a young age for five fundamental reasons:

  1. Children appreciate history more when they learn it early.
  2. Children may not be learning everything in school that you consider important.
  3. Learning history helps children develop a sense of identity.
  4. History can help your child develop qualities like compassion and empathy.
  5. Learning local American history helps children build connections to their community.
